Aztec Concert Choir Performs Nov. 24
The event features "Lord Nelson Mass" by Josef Hadyn.
Josef Haydn’s spectcular “Lord Nelson Mass” will be performed by the 150-voice Aztec Concert Choir, conducted by Chris Allen, at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 24, in Smith Recital Hall.
Soloists include Victoria Lund, soprano; Siobahn Sung, alto; Bryan Balderman, tenor; and Pablo Siqueiros, bass.
Haydn’s chief biographer has written that his Mass “…is arguably Haydn’s greatest single composition.” Written in 1798, the Mass coincided with Napoleon’s defeat in the Battle of the Nile by British forces led by Admiral Horatio Nelson. Because of this coincidence, the Mass gradually acquired the nickname “Lord Nelson Mass.”
The Aztec Concert Choir is the largest choral performance group on campus. They have participated in two Winter Pops Concerts with the San Diego Symphony and Marvin Hamlisch, conductor, and will be a featured ensemble in the Soirée of Music and Dance on Dec. 9.
Tickets for the Aztec Concert Choir winter performance range from $8 to $12 and are available at www.music.sdsu.edu.
