SDSU Opera Theater Stages 'The Mikado'
The popular comedic operetta debuts Nov. 20 and runs through Nov. 22.
SDSU's production of "The Mikado" takes place during National Opera Week.
SDSU Opera Theater’s fall 2009 production is one of the most famous and popular operettas of all time, Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado.
This delightful Victorian-era British satire, set in the fictional Japanese town of Titipu, features 25 young singers, as well as an all-student chamber orchestra. Performances are at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20 and 21, and at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 22, in Smith Recital Hall on the SDSU campus.
About the production
When The Mikado first premiered at the Savoy Theater in London in 1885, it was hailed as Gilbert & Sullivan’s greatest masterpiece. The story contains all the necessary Gilbert & Sullivan ingredients for a delightful production, with such familiar songs as “A Wandering Minstrel I,” “Three Little Maids” and, of course, the patter-song, “I’ve Got a Little List.”
