Roberta Gottlieb Gives Grant Advice at Workshop
Dr. Gottlieb is a professor of biology, the director of the SDSU BioScience Center and the first Frederick G. Henry Chair in Life Sciences.

Dr. Roberta Gottlieb recently shared her expertise with an attentive group of faculty, staff and students at a campus workshop.
Dr. Gottlieb is a professor of biology, director of SDSU's BioScience Center and the first Frederick G. Henry Chair in Life Sciences. The workshop, hosted by the SDSU Research Foundation, focused on best practices for obtaining external funding and included tips on how to market and establish oneself as a reputable scientist and collaborator.
Grantwriting suggestions
Dr. Gottlieb, who has secured more than $2 million in funding during the past two years, offered general grantwriting suggestions, including:
- Clarity
- Brevity
- Neatness
- Imaginative approaches
- Crisp experiments
She also provided specific advice about applying to the National Institutes of Health. She gave credit to her own team of researchers, and practices what she preaches by sharing her enthusiasm for science and mentoring others.
Participants said they appreciated the personal examples and specific recommendations offered by Dr. Gottlieb as a successful and experienced researcher.
About Dr. Gottlieb and the BioScience Center
Dr. Gottlieb was appointed director of SDSU's BioScience Center in 2006. The SDSU BioScience Center focuses on the role of infection and inflammation in cardiovascular diseases.
